Backing up to a CD

See Also: Restoring From A CD Program Utilities,

Backing up to a CD is a bit different than going directly to a diskette, hard drive, zip drive or other media (flash memory sticks etc.) CD's require additional software to actually burn the information onto the CD. Generally, your computer will have some sort of CD burning software already on it. Here are several methods to create your backup onto a CD.

If you have Windows XP, click Start and then My Computer. In the My Computer window, click on your C drive and in your C drive, click on your Dawin directory (yellow folder) with your RIGHT hand mouse button. Select Send To... from the popup menu and then select your CD drive. This will normally launch your CD's burning software and step you through saving your dawin directory to the CD. (This does depend on your CD burning software)

Another way to do it is to use your CD burning software to create a DATA CD, saving your c:\dawin directory to the CD. Since CD burning software varies widely, we can't really give you directions but most of this software is pretty straight forward. You want to create a DATA CD and then select the entire c:\dawin directory. Another feature of most CD burning software is to create a Favorites CD or a template that will automatically backup your selections instead of having to select the files and directories each time. This can be a good thing. You can create a template for a data CD that contains everything on your computer that's important to you to backup. You can select dawin as well as other folders or files (my documents for example) so that your backup CD will contain everything. Each time you want to backup, you open the template and burn a new CD. This is a great way to protect not only dawin but other files, folders, pictures, documents etc that are important to you. (you may need to check the help on your burning software to create a template)

Another feature of most CD burning software, is to format a blank CD so that it behaves like a hard drive. After formatting the CD, this let's you save files directly to the CD without having to open the CD burning software. This method will also let you backup your dawin using Dawin's Backup/Restore utility and save the backup directly to the pre-formated CD. You'll need to look through your CD burning software to see if this feature is available.

Using a CD to create your backups is desirable over saving your information to floppies. CD (correctly created) are much more reliable and using the template method, you'll never be without your important information.
